Ochoa rules Kuya Buboy Abalos Chess Tournament

Kyle Emmanuel Ochoa of Malolos City, Bulacan ruled the Kuya Buboy Abalos Limbas Mandaragit Eagles Club Chess Tournament held at Robinsons Galleria, Quezon City on Sunday, October 8, 2023.

Ochoa scored a perfect 7.0 points to win the trophy and bring home the P5,000 cash prize plus a gift certificate in this one-day rapid chess tournament sponsored by Renato "Buboy" Abalos and organized by the Philippine National Police (PNP) Chess Club.

Ochoa swept the tournament and defeated Sofia Angelique Alcala, Macwaine Molina, Jerry Tolentino, Joe Andy Calivoso, Mark Louie Velasco, Abraham Bayron and Jerome Villanueva in succession.

"I'm so happy to have won the tournament and it feels really, really good," said Ochoa.

Nelson Busa Jr., John Lee Antonio and Rodolfo "Jun" Panopio Jr. scored 6.0 points apiece while Jhulo Goloran and Jerome Villanueva finished with identical 5.5 points in the tournament also supported by Martin "Binky" Gaticales, a member of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) board of director.

"This is indeed a big help for the promotion of chess. I would like to really thank my good friend, PNP chess coach Mr. Jomar "Joms" Mendoza Pascua for promoting this event," said Abalos.

"I am so proud of the grace of winning, it is truly outstanding. My best wishes and congratulations are for you, chess champion Kyle Emmanuel Ochoa of Malolos City, Bulacan, I wish you to continue it and get more success. Congratulations."
