MJ Bernabe made key baskets to help Mapua University stun Colegio de San Juan de Letran with a 69-64 escape in the NCAA Season 101 juniors basketball on Tuesday at the FilOil EcoOil Centre.
The young big man drained a floater that turned a 62-54 deficit to a 64-62 lead for the Red Robins with 1:22 left in the fourth period. Bernabe then sank a pair of free throws off an Earl Dahino foul to seal the comeback victory for Mapua.
Those crucial baskets sealed a double-double outing for Bernabe with 11 points and 10 rebounds to go with two assists and one steal while Froilan Reyes churned out 14 markers, three boards, two dimes, and two steals.
The victory allowed Mapua to take its second victory in a row and improve to 4-2 in Group A while the Squires fell to a 4-3 card in Group B.
Before Bernabe's heroics, the Squires were holding a comfortable eight-point cushion in the final five minutes following two charities from Isaiah Chua to bring the former back-to-back champions to a 62-54 advantage.
